Broken Beatz Club @ Blue Note, Brüsselerstr. 96, KÖLN E-Z ROLLERS "TITLES OF THE UNEXPECTED" ALBUM TOUR E-Z Rollers feat. Lady Roller & MC Jakes (Moving Shadow / UK) + Residents J-Cut & Kolt Siewerts Blue Note Lounge: Reggae & Dancehall von U-Schal Sound (BlazeFireBlaze) www.movingshadow.com www.basswerk.de www.brokenbeatz.de Like many of today’s drum & bass crews, Alex and Jay go way back. "I was into hip-hop and breaking back in the day"’ says Alex, "While Jay was into rare groove, funk and soul. I had some little bits of equipment back in about 1983, and had tried putting together an album, but it was rubbish". Another stab at production came in 1990, when Jay and another friend of theirs (Andrew Riches, or as he would later be known, ‘Richie’), decided to join up with Alex in a bid to make tunes. Once again, the results were decidedly iffy: "We called ourselves the Plastic Clothes Mechanics, because Alex worked in a plastics factory, Richie worked in a clothes shop and I wasn’t a Mechanic!" laughs Jay. "It was a steep learning curve as we got ripped off in the studio mastering to an audio cassette, the pressing plant laughed at us when we turned up with that!. In the end we got it pressed, all good fun". Shortly after, Alex and Jay sat down and decided it was time to get something more coherent together. Unfortunately their plans fell through when Jay lost his job, so Alex joined forces with another friend/producer Danny Demierre (who would later become Flytronix) to form ‘Hyper-On-Experience’. This was one of the first Wave of proper signings to Moving Shadow and they produced a number of old skool classics like ‘H.E. Anthem’ (SH17) and ‘Lords of the Null Lines’ (SH30). A little while later, Jay got back into production and put his vast record collection together with Richie’s to become another classic Shadow act – ‘JMJ & Richie’, responsible for such cult tunes as ‘Case Closed’ (SH35) ‘Free La Funk’ (SH6, and ‘Montana’ (SH102). Despite these other projects, Jay and Alex planned to work together and in 1995 formed the E-Z Rollers and released the first single. Following this they compiled ‘Storm from the East’ (ASH4), a collection of tracks that showcased the regional talent emerging from the East of England. For their own production work, the pair decided on a vocal approach and enlisted local friend Kelly Richards. Their first long-player together, ‘Dimensions Of Sound’ (ASH5) arrived in 1996. Its gentle, jazz influenced hooks, solid moving beats and melodic keys, were wonderfully enhanced by Kelly's smooth vocals. Cuts like ‘Rolled Into One’, ‘Jazz Talkin’ and ‘Dropping Science Part 2’ helped make the album the classic it is today. The benchmark was thus set. The crew kept their hand in over the next few months with tracks like ‘Retro’ (SH103), ‘Synesthesia’ (SH110), and ‘25 Alpha/Spin Out’ (SH114), before unleashing their second album, ‘Weekend World’ (ASH12), in 1998. It was an album that hit the spot at least as much as their first, focusing even more heavily on those impossibly groovy basslines that had been overtly hinted at on ‘Dimensions of Sound’. Infectious singles like ‘Tough At The Top’ (SH120), and the even bigger ‘Walk This Land’ (SH130) - a cut that got to an astonishing No.18 in the UK charts after being used for the British flick, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, sent the E-Z Rollers popularity rocketing and prompted a re-release of the album in 1999. "They just came to us and asked for a record one day". Says Alex of the ‘Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels’ soundtrack. "They said we would only get some money if the film did well, but we thought ""Why not?"" Initially it sounded like a bit of a Whoops! There Go My Pyjamas! sort of film, like a ‘Carry On’ movie, but all of a sudden, driving through London, we saw the billboards and posters and realised something might come of it". Although the Rollers have undeniably been blessed with a Midas touch in the studio, they have been careful to keep their feet well and truly on the ground. As well as compiling another ‘Storm From The East’ collection (ASH and the celebrated Drumfunk Hooliganz 1&2 (ASH14/1, they’ve been busy getting their heads down on a production tip as well as developing their own sound and vision. "Our project has now developed from putting a couple of tunes together, to getting together vocals and the whole live thing", reveals Jay. "We wanted to take it to a bigger production level, recording brass sections, live instruments and vocals, stuff that actually takes a high level of ability and skill". As for their gigs Jay elaborates: "We started taking a five piece band on the road but it was a lot of time and hassle dismantling the studio and packing it up for the road etc. So we changed it to a DJ and vocals outfit, with Alex and myself using three decks a laptop and keyboard alongside Kelly and MC Jakes. Jakes works really well around Kelly while Alex and I just mix it up on decks, so you get the full energy of a three deck set with live stuff going on too. It seems to go off where ever we play.” The E-Z Rollers are set to keep up the good work in all areas with the completion of their third album for Moving Shadow “Titles Of The Unexpected” due out January 2003, this includes some very special guest appearances from the likes of old school rapper Doug.E.Fresh and disco diva Sharon Brown. So far Roni Size and The Amalgamations of Soundz have taken theirs hands to remixing tracks from the album. More remixes are to come from some of the flyest producers on the scene. Playstation have been keeping them busy, licensing tracks for “Jet Ski Rider “,‘TOCA 2’, ‘Rollcage’, ‘GTA2’, and ‘Rollcage Stage 2’. Oh, and they also have their own label called Intercom to think about which is now coming up for its twenty fifth release plus the first compilation album “Lickable Beats” which is due in early 2003. So, although it might be Tough At The Top, it’s E-Z when you know how….
