Am Freitag, dem 01-09-06 findet der 3. Teil der neuen Eventreihe „JAMBOREE“ im MS Connexion in Mannheim statt - Promotet von Jamboree Events, Royal Rumble & Wickedvibes.

Ziel dieser Veranstaltung ist es, dem zahlenden Publikum Qualität sowie exklusive und anspruchsvolle Artists zu präsentieren. Namhafte DJ´s & MC´s aus allen Herren Ländern, sowie regionale & überregionale Artists aus Deutschland werden dieser Veranstaltung ihren besonderen Flair verleihen.

Beim 3. Event ist es endlich soweit. DJ FRICTION beehrt uns mit einem Gastspiel auf der Jamboree! Friction ist wohl einer der DJ´s, der den Sprung in die Champions League schon geschafft hat. Seine Mix´n´Skillz sind 1A, damit ist er in einem Atemzug zu nennen wie ein Andy C, Hype oder Mampi Swift. Am Mic wird er von seinem besten Freund unterstütz, SP MC! Zusammen sind Sie die Killa Kombo schlecht hin! Beide waren schon eine Ewigkeit nicht mehr in unserer Region zu hören, so kann sich jeder auf dieses exklusive Booking freuen! Auf jeder Jamboree bekommen die Newcommer aus unserer Region eine Chance. Diesmal wird DJ Flavour von der High Times Crew den Abend mit Smooven Beatz eröffnen! das mal ein artists nicht kommt kann passieren, das war auch schon oft genug bei anderen Promotern und deren Partys so! Schlimm ist es nur wenn kein Ersatz da. ist. Die Jungs sind Fix gebucht und Flüge ebenfalls, deswegen sehe ich da kein problem! Ich habe schon soviel Partys geamcht in den letzten Jahren und kann sagen, das es max. 10 Artsits nicht gekommen sind in den letzten 8 Jahren! Das ist doch ein guter schnitt, da kann sich keiner beschweren!

At 28 years of age, Brighton raised Friction is without a doubt one of the most talented DJ-Producers to make a significant impact in Drum & Bass in recent years.From the age of 15 Friction has been dedicated to developing his skills and ability to achieve where he is today. With a rapidly increasing worldwide following and massive tunes on labels like Valve, True Playaz and Renegade Hardware, a batch burning in the pipeline and his self owned imprint running smoothly; where did the apocalyptic sparks ignite?As a teenager whose first love was music, Friction used his friend's decks to mix and was soon passing mix tapes around at school. Over the following 3 years Friction DJ'd out at events and promoted his own club nights. With his preference of music style and scene association it was inevitable he would link up with established Brighton Drum & Bass producers such as Stakka, Skynet, Nu Balance & K-Tee. At the age of 18, Friction became friends with these Brighton based music heads and was soon inspired to produce the beats and bass he loved, provided by a perfect opportunity to be nurtured and gain production experience. Many hours were spent in the studio where Friction was able to develop and execute the natural talent he appeared to have. February 1999 welcomed his debut release. Using the collaborative name 'Kinnetix', Stakka & Friction released 'Critical Mass' on the Under Fire label. Friction was now receiving interest from major Drum & Bass record companies. Most significant was from Clayton, boss of TOV & Renegade Hardware. He was invited to produce a track for the 'Here Comes Trouble' EP. The result saw Friction's elementary production 'Photon' gain him the position of a talented producer. Regular bookings on the UK and European club circuit started to appear and raver's were starting to talk about this new, exciting DJ from Brighton. As the releases started to flow and the word spread about his ability to enthuse a dance-floor, regular flights out of London took him to play at events in Holland, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Australia, Japan, USA, Singapore & France to name a few. Then came the first real acknowledgment of his talent, with Friction winning the title of 'Best World Newcomer' at the 2002 'Drum and Bass Arena' awards. People really were starting to take notice of the extreme talent he was offering.With more heads hearing of his skills and tracks like the massive 'Robocop' and 'Electrolux' smashing dance-floors worldwide 2003 saw Friction win Knowledge magazines 'Best Breakthrough' award. Things were rounded off with a link up to Dillinja and Lemon D's Valve Recordings and the launch of his own label 'Shogun Audio'. He is now regarded as one of the scenes front running DJ's alongside names like Andy C, Zinc, Hype and Mampi Swift and also regularly demonstrates his skills to a global audience via BBC 1Xtra on his fortnightly 'Mix Show'.Last year saw Friction hit success in the CD market with the massive 'Bingo Sessions Vol.1' CD mixed alongside DJ Zinc which actually graced the UK album charts. In the 2004 DJ Magazine world DJ poll he was the 4th highest ranked drum & bass DJ coming in at 107th. This was followed up with another 4th place position in the 'Accelerated Culture' awards as well as taking home the 'Best Newcomer' title at the same event.The UK's hottest, freshest drum & bass DJ talent is undoubtedly Friction and its time to take things to the next level.

"I want to cement myself in the scene... Now I'm here and I'm not going anywhere." - Bold but not arrogant words from SP MC.

Chatting to him in the sun in the garden of his North London pad it is apparent early on just how gracious he is to be where he is, how he got here and above all, how enthusiastic and opinionated he is about the scene. With that in mind let's get right to it..

What's the low-down on how the MCing thing started?
"I listened to hardcore and early jungle tapes when I was pretty young because one of my best friend's older brother was out raving when we were first-years, so I got into it when I was about 11 or 12, going out on the weekend and collecting flyers to bang on my wall, just got into it from then. Then, as we were getting older we would do a few house parties and Mcing as a bit of a joke really, just having a laugh, nothing really serious. Then I got introduced to my now flat-mate DJ Jubei. When I was about 19 we started doing mix-tapes, got a partnership going and began playing at one of our good friend's nights in Essex, where we lived at the time and had a residency. It started becoming more serious and I began writing lyrics and trying to learn the Jedi art of MCing. That's when it kicked off really. Jubei and I did a CD, which found its way to GQ who was my strongest influence anyway, and then for me to get a link with him was magic. Up until then it was the 9-5 but within 6 months of meeting GQ I was playing all over the shop and people were interested in me. GQ has never put his name behind an MC before so it's kind of inspiring to say yeah "you're part of my camp" and he got me on Unique Artists - Boom Agency. Before, I couldn't really make waves because I didn't have a surfboard but GQ gave me a board. I'm quite proud of being recognised by GQ - in fact its what I will always be most proud of. He's a nice guy and he's got thousands of wise words and who everyone in drum n bass uses as a benchmark for an MC."

Do you ask GQ for advice?
"It's not like I phone him up and run lyrics by him - nothing as deep as that but he'll always have a wise word if I get into a scrape or if I'm playing at a certain night. There's different buttons to press for different crowds so you have to remember that - you can't do a set routine for every place you go - some places it'll go off and some places they'll be standing there scratching their arse. You have to get the most out of the crowd -in my opinion, without outstaging anyone. I think the best MC should never outstage the DJ. I am quite happy to play number 2 - its no skin off my nose. At the end of the day I don't think I'll ever be an MC that draws a massive crowd - you know "wow SP", everyone's flocking - its not gonna happen. My lyrics just try and compliment whatever tune is playing at that specific time. I want to be known as someone that can adjust to the terrain."

How do you write your lyrics?
"It depends on the mood but quite a lot of the time I use the voice memo on my mobile, if I'm in my car or something. You have ideas all the time - I can't sit down and write a whole tune. For me its little pieces of a jigsaw and I gradually put it together for a 16 bar or 32 bar thing. Mainly I talk about beats and bass, dubplates - the club vibe. I try and make people react. I listen to a lot of hip-hop for inspiration. For me the best lyricists in the UK are hip hop MC's like Jehst - he's disgusting, and Klashnikoff is a sicko!"


Do you think it's hard for new blood to break through when all the old dogs are still on the scene?
"It may be easy for me to say as I'm on the other side of the fence, but I think many people have this attitude that you need a special handshake and have to know somebody. People might say that the only reason I'm where I am is because I know GQ, but I only got to know GQ because I sent him a CD and he was in it. What I'm trying to get across is that if you're an up and coming MC or DJ or producer don't ever think that you're not going to make it because a lot of people have this attitude that the scene is saturated with people and no one else can get in, that if you want to jump up on the platform you have to knock someone off the other side. I don't think it works like that, now there are so many more producers and DJ's like Break, Sub Focus, TC, & Chase & Status and then you've got your MC's that have become more prominent like Eksman, Verse and myself.

People are making waves and always will be. I don't think it's a closed thing at all, its just about standing out. You have to sound original. So what do you look for in a good MC and whom do you rate? My favourite MC's are GQ and Dynamite. They can go to any club, play to any tune, any country and they know how to adapt and be themselves. That is what a good MC is. You've got to look for versatility, character and a style. It's all about people that can adapt to the terrain who are really aware of the crowd. A good MC compliments the night. I want to be one of those MC's that the DJ likes too. I think if the DJ likes you you're always going to be working. It's really important. You don't need to lick their arse, what you basically have to do is not chat when they're mixing. When they're mixing let them do their thing. Show a little repect for the DJ & the music!."

You've established yourself across the board - you must be pretty busy?
"Luckily for me I've been given the opportunity from getting the stamp of approval from GQ & Friction. People are interested in booking me. From that I've been able to branch out. I started out at the Emcee monthly with GQ and got to work with loads of different people. From there I've gone to Renegade Hardware and all the way through to Valve, Metalheadz, Prototype, and then across to Soul.R and Hospital.

What is your favourite type of night?
"Well for high impact my favourite night is something that is just literally going off like playing with Friction at Hardware or Fabric with the big dogs like Grooverider and Andy C, these are nights that are just kicking off -that is a massive buzz.

But then on the other side of the coin a real big buzz is doing a much more musical thing where its not so much about hyping its about complementing it like playing at a Soul.R or Hospital night. For me the End is the bullring - everyone is round you at 360 degrees, its really intimidating the first few times you play there, its really scary. Luckily enough for me playing with Friction for Hardware is an easy job. Ed is killing it at the moment. Hardware at the End is special, people all around you, hands in the air. But then again, at Hospitality just seeing everyone bubbling and grooving away and I'm doing a little singy thing is wicked as well."

Do you have any plans to get in the studio?
Tracks haven't been a priority as I've been trying to establish myself in the clubs because that's the foundation. Having said that though, I've done some vocals for Nu.Tone's album, a little singy thing: it's a bad tune. I plan to do a couple of tunes with Clipz, TC & Commix. Friction and I might be doing a mix CD, it may take a minute but hopefully we'll do something for late 2005.

Also some Hip-Hop with Breakage. He's been giving me these beats and they're lashing! I'm looking to dabble in hip-hop for sure." Look out for a Breakage track on Eksman's forthcoming album, featuring Eks & myself. In his own words "2005 is looking all good!"

das will ich aber auch meinen, Friction & SP waren ja auch schon seit einem Jahr nicht mehr in Mannheim zu Gast, so ist dieses Booking gelich noch höher zu bewerten, da er ein seltener Gast bei uns ist. Die Kombination aus Friction & SP ist wohl einer der Kombos die am angesagtesten ist, in UK, Europa oder der ganzen Welt!
