EXILE
A: Exile ft. Breakmaus – Arrested (Original Mix)
B: Exile – Summertime Man
C: Exile ft. Breakmaus – Arrested (John B Martini Mix)
D: Exile ft. Breakmaus – Arrested (Exitboy Mix) [NB THIS IS A DEEP/DISCO HOUSE MIX]
One of the most beautiful vocal D&B tracks of the year, ‘Arrested’ was created through the collaboration, of Tim Shaw (AKA Exile) with songwriter Johnny Lattimer and vocalist Jamie Minoprio, up in Durham (UK). It’s rare to see a record crafted so meticulously in Drum & Bass, live instrumentation, original vocals and electronic beatmongering blended so well - Exile’s ruthless command & skill with technology is undoubtedly apparent in this piece.
‘Arrested’ is a mature, quality song, jazz, funk, pop and D&B all together. Beautiful vocals, a la Jameroquai, excellently recorded, live Jazz Rhodes Piano and Slap Bass, fused in a D&B underground club context, building up with a solid, heavy groove that really makes this track stand out as pure exquisite quality. John B comes in for a more laid back Lounge Remix, and Tim, under his Deep house ‘ExitBoy’ pseudonym rocks out with a kinky disco-house remix. Check out ‘Summertime Man’ for another slice of advanced melodic D&B.
Tangent is again setting the standard for the evolution and development of Drum & Bass.
Exile has just completed his Master’s Degree in Electro-Acoustics & Composition at Durham University, and has been working on lots of other non-D&B projects, some involving Quad surround sound and acoustic modelling. He is also in the process of developing his own computer software for a truly mobile music creation and performance system to take out on the road. Watch out for other releases on Beta, Renegade Hardware and Andy C’s Frequency Label.

GREG PACKER
A: Disco Magic
B: Depend on Me
C: What am I supposed to do?
D: Now Feel It
THE PACKER'S BACK! His second release for John B's Tangent Recordings is a Disco-tastic Rip-roaring Frantic-Filterfantastic Soulful Drum & Bass EP.
He's really got the feel for the killer liquid funk grooves, and these 4 tracks demonstrate his versatility in the field, swinging from the Filtered Disco loop D&B style favoured by the likes of J. Majik and Peshay (Disco Magic) to the choppy fast scuttling breaks and soulful vocals of 'Depend on Me'. Swervey Fabio style D&B blasts out in 'What am I supposed to do?' and the more subtle Good Looking vibe on 'Now Feel it' takes care of the more atmospheric side to the style.
This EP is sure to appeal to all followers or the Soulful/Liquid-Funk crowd and atmospheric Djs alike. Have no fear though, this is a cut above - the quality clearly separates itself from the rest of the liquid-funk-by-numbers bunch - at Tangent it's about more than just sticking a couple of vocal samples on top of a standard D&B Rinse out - and Greg Packer's one of the best guys to deal with the matter.
Also watch out for Greg's release (Be-Bop/Fiesta Latina) on Chihuahua, and a forthcoming album for Tangent.

MARS

B: Kandahar
Another Rock-solid release for Tangent Recordings from Mars - 19 year old Will Marsden from Woking.
2 deep, dubby tracks here, soulful vocals drop in and out through the hypnotizing jazzy grooves, punctuated by stabs of live sax and infectious jacking beats. Excellent DJ tools perfectly arranged to sit well in the mix, yet interesting and original enough to capture the attention and sound noticeably individual. Mars is developing a great niche for himself, a deep liquid-funk vibe, intelligent production and a fresh new attitude to Drum & Bass.
Will has been traveling the Far East and Australia over the last few months, but is back in the studio now working on new material for future releases on Tangent, so watch out baybee...

GREG PACKER
A: Be-Bop
B: Fiesta latina
Ay Caramba! Greg Packer’s back, this time on a cheeky Latin vibe! arrrrrrrriBa!
A truly versatile producer is Mr Packer. He’s from Perth, Australia, has so far notched up an impressive release history, putting out tracks on Tangent, Good Looking, Defunked, Phuturistic Bluez to name a few. Lately the man has been drinking a lot of tequila, and has got the taste for a bit of spicy Latin flavaz - ‘Be-Bop’ has been smashed out all over, a tasty groove, with acoustic guitars and luschous beachside vibes, but still smacking the beats and bass coming hard atchaa. ‘Fiesta Latina’ on the flip is a little less subtle, going for the all-out salsa extravaganza. Both are good solid dance-floor numbers, with hot jalepino rinsssout accction helping them to stand out from the rest. Aiiii KucaraTchaaa!
Mr. Greg Packer is currently putting the finishing touches to a killah album for John B’s tangent label, has a disco-tastic double pack coming out later in November also on tangent, and a few other singles in the pipeline for other well-respected labels. He also enjoys long walks on the local beach and hobbies include genuine Aussie barbies, bungie jumping and surfing.

EXILE
A: Save Me
B: Help! I’m Stuck to the Dancefloor!
Breaking new ground yet again, Exile brings the electro-funk with his third release for Beta Recordings. Not ashamed to experiment and approach the the Breakbeat sound with a fresh, advanced attitude, this time he shocks us all by singing himself (surprisingly well) on “Save Me”, and introduces a new fusion of electro and sonic mangling to D&B like never heard before.
“Save Me” draws you in with a cleverly designed intro, organic atmospheric sounds recorded in his local environment are smashed head-on in contrast to the very electronic nature of the beats and bassline, and the processing of the voice. Despite the technical nature and driving force of the track, it’s also a rather catchy song and works in clubs on many levels, working excellently in both big arenas and smaller bar-type settings.
“Help! I’m Stuck to the Dancefloor” demonstrates Exile’s amazing sound-design capabilities, and also his reliable ability to program tight and penetrating breaks and grooves that keep the crowd stepping and motivated. Watch for the incredible faux-3D spacialized sound manipulation in the breakdown! WhoaH!
